I’m not trying to hit targets; I’m not trying to take over the world
I had the pleasure of speaking to ex-footballer and Managing Director of Engage FS, Sam Sloma, about starting small, habit formation and perspective.
Sam is a former footballer and current Managing Director of Engage FS, a boutique financial advisory geared towards helping sportsmen & women, young professionals & entrepreneurs build wealth for their future.

🌱 Starting small
I’m not trying to hit targets; I’m not trying to take over the world.
This may sound backwards but hold on…
What Sam means is, when you’re writing your to do list don’t start with:
Take over the world.
Start small.
Ask yourself, what can I do today that will help me reach my goal?
It starts with habit formation.
🔁 Habit formation
If I had to sum up Build The Invisible in one word, it would be consistency.
Sam spoke candidly about the importance of consistency in his life:
…when you're younger you think you know quite a lot and then as you get older, you realise you know very little about a lot of things; so just the ability to learn, and enjoy learning, has really expanded my habits because now one of my daily habits is I listen to an hour to two hours a day of something, whether that's a podcast, or a book, or whether that's physically reading a book and that is learning for me.
I try to do the same, and it was from this process that the BTI Journal was born.
I believe, like Sam, that being insatiably curious is fundamental, and forming habits around that is where you will start to see those compounding effects.
💡 What would you put on your billboard?
Tim Ferris closes each of his interviews with a question:
What would you put on a billboard to get a message out to millions of people?
I asked each contributor of Build The Invisible that same question.
Sam’s gave two answers, both centred on perspective:
When I’m old and I’m looking back on my life, what am I going to be most proud of?
The second is a quote from Steve Jobs:
You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.
Now ask yourself, what would you put on your billboard?
I encourage you to share your billboard with me by replying to this Substack or tagging me in your post on X.
I’ll share my favourites in the next edition!
